Giant Reed

Giant Reed - Photo courtesy of Weedbusters

Special disposal notes: Most or all of its spread is by rhizomes (and stems that can also re-sprout), through dumping of greenwaste, as little or no seed is set in New Zealand.

How to Control:

  1. Cut down close to ground, dig out entire root/rhizome mass (large clumps will require machinery). Dispose of roots/rhizomes to landfill, or by deep-burying on site, or knock off the soil and pile up (ideally on a bed of dry wood) and burn when appropriate. Slashed stems occasionally re-sprout but can usually be left to rot down on site.
  2. Cut stray emergent shoots at ground level, inject 10 ml undiluted Amitrole into each stem. Extra care must be taken when using undiluted herbicde: Minimise herbicide contact with soil and other vegetation as Amitrole is non-selective, residual and corrosive.
  3. Cut down close to ground & knapsack spray regrowth when 60cm with (150ml haloxyfop + 50ml crop oil/10L water). Repeat treatment required.
  4. Cut down close to ground & knapsack spray regrowth at or at approximately 1.5m with (200ml glyphosate + 5g metsulfuron + 100ml penetrant/10L water). Total coverage and follow-up is essential for effective control. Continue respraying re-growth at 1.5m until regrowth ceases (may require 4-6 treatments).

Can be controlled by grazing. Follow up frequently until eradicated. Don’t replant until 6 months after last herbicide application.

Caution: when using any herbicide or pesticide PLEASE READ THE LABEL THOROUGHLY to ensure that all instructions and safety requirements are followed.
