Ivy

Hedera Helix Subhelix - Image courtesy of The New Zealand Plant Conservation NetworkSpecial disposal notes: Cut stems root at nodes. Leave hanging up in tree to dry out, dry and burn, or take to landfill

How to Control:

  1. Cut stump application:  Cut stem & treat liberally with (5g metsulfuron/1L water) or (50ml ®/1L water) within 10 minutes. Treat areas of  exposed stem as well. Best for aerial vines.
  2. Vial method for ground infestations. Pull up all stems possible & dispose. Treat remainder by placing cut vine ends in vials 5-10m apart containing (1g metsulfuron/20ml water). Move vials monthly until plant eradicated.
  3. Spray (summer): (100ml glyphosate/10L water) or  (5g metsulfuron /10L water)  or (60ml Tordon Brushkiller®/10L water). Add penetrant to all mixes. Do not use for ivy growing against trees.

Many plants do not produce viable (or any) seed, but once established, ivy is hard to kill and dispose of. Stumps resprout and cut stems root at nodes. In damp areas growth on trees can survive for long periods after stump cut. However in most cases the vine dies, although slowly. For aerial growth on trees in wet areas, remove large stems gradually after cutting stump to minimise shock to host trees. In all other cases, leave stems to die on the tree. Always dry and burn or deep bury all cut stems or take them to a refuse transfer station.

CAUTION: when using any herbicide or pesticide PLEASE READ THE LABEL THOROUGHLY to ensure that all instructions and safety requirements are followed.

Weed Action In Mangawhai

Its beautiful estuary, a great surf beach, the sandspit with its special terns and dotterels and the wonderful natural environment combine to make Mangawhai the place to be. Unfortunately, parts of these special places are becoming overrun with garden plants that have ‘jumped the fence’ since early pioneers introduced them. Many were brought here as […]
